Cicero and his friends

Note 222 — CAELIUS

Adnah David Jones translation

It would be wrong to pass over the name of Matius in silence. A very fine letter of his on the death of Caesar remains (Ad fam. xi. 28). He was a true friend of Caesar; but it is to be remarked that he was not one of those whom he made praetors and consuls, and whose debts he had often paid. Matius never filled any important political office, and his name would not have come down to us if it had not been for Cicero’s correspondence.
