Canute the Great, 995 (circa)-1035, and the Rise of Danish Imperialism during the Viking Age

Note 202 — Chapter VI

Reading edition

Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, 1023. The story given by later writers that Thurkil was slain by a Danish mob soon after his exile cannot be credited. It doubtless originated in a desire that the persecutor of Saint Alphege should suffer retribution. See especially the life of this saint in Langebek, Scriptores, ii., 453.
