Prior to the reign of Henry VIII. the sheriff had been allowed to burn heretics without the writ de hæretico comburendo. It was rendered necessary by stat. 25. Hen. VIII. cap. 14. Neal’s Puritans, vol. i. pp. 7, 13. The writ was abolished by 29 Car. II. c. 9.
