Note 1319 — APPENDIX I NOTES OF ANTIQUITIES

Reading edition

Some of the older sets of college rooms in Oxford still show the difference of rooms referred to here and several times in the Lives. There was a large room, the 'chamber' or living and sleeping room, with two or more beds; off this, there were two or more tiny rooms, the 'studies,' in which the students did their work by day, boxed up close in winter for warmth. See T. G. Jackson's Wadham College, p. 133.
