Note 103 — LOVE IN THE CITY.

Reading edition

Note, by Dr. Southey.—It may be objected that a lady like Miss Juliana Smashaway, born in Crutched Friars, and educated in a select seminary at Kennington Cross, should use the well-known Hibernicism, "This beats Banaher." But let it be remembered that she was devotedly attached to Captain Connor; consequently, often in his company; and hence naturally would adopt the language of one whom she "loved not wisely, but too well." The same remark is applicable to the term "Too-roo," used by Netty in the beautiful trio, Act 1, Scene 2.
