Note 113 — Chapter XXIX · SIDELIGHTS ON AUDUBON AND HIS CONTEMPORARIES

Reading edition

This manuscript list is preserved with the original drawings of The Birds of America, in possession of the Historical Society of New York, where I was permitted to examine it. It bears the following attests of both naturalists in autograph:

"The above list of the Birds of America was made at London on the 15th. of December, 1837, when it was supposed to contain all the known species.

"John J. Audubon, of Louisiana."

"The above list of North American Birds was drawn up by myself to please Mr. J. J. Audubon.

"London, 15 December, 1837. "Charles L. Bonaparte.

"The total number of good species, 460," has been added in pencil.
