Note 3* — PRIVATIVE TERMS.
Reading edition
The account of Privative Terms which is given by Locke, is the same with that which is presented in the text. The difference is, that Locke, who has stated the case correctly, has not attempted its analysis. He says (B. II. ch. viii.), “We have negative names, such as insipid, silence, nihil, &c., which words denote positive ideas; v.g., taste, sound, being; with a signification of their absence.”—(Author’s Note.)
