It was first published (so far as I know) by Mr. Shadworth Hodgson in his "Theory of Practice," vol. i. p. 416-436, § 57; but I am indebted for my acquaintance with it to Mr. D. A. Spalding, who discovered it independently, and announced it in the Examiner, December 30, 1871; September 6, 1873; March 14, 1874; and in Nature, January 8, 1874.
