Note 147 — Chapter XII · SOCIAL ORGANIZATION
Reading edition
Part of the feeling about the ettowe-iyatik type of fetish is the extreme reluctance to disturb it, or to remove it; so that as long as there is a woman who can be trusted to safeguard the fetish properly in its house, i.e., to feed it, and to preclude intrusion, the fetish will be left in the house it is associated with. On the other hand, it is the men who are supposed to know the songs and prayers associated with the fetish.
