Abeokuta and the Camaroons Mountains, Vol. 1 (of 2)

Note 42 — Chapter II

Reading edition

We read of a white man, who, compelled to camp under a tree outside the Awaye gate of Yoruba, was visited by hundreds, and heard the women sing—

‘Oibo gun sidi Akpe.’

‘The white camped at the foot of the Akpe thorn.’

Which is truly an echo of Mungo Park’s well-known episode.
