Note B — LETTER I. Dominican Republic.
Reading edition
When the island was discovered by Columbus, it received from him the name of Hispaniola—“Little Spain.” It was afterwards called Santo Domingo; but the original name given it by the natives, and revived by Dessalines, is said to be Hayti. The Haytien territory, however, is but about two-fifths of the island, the greater part being owned by the Dominicans.
