A mission to Gelele, King of Dahome, Vol. 1 (of 2)

Note 281 — Chapter X

Reading edition

This leniency and amenity of discipline form a curious contrast with the horribly barbarous punishments which, according to Bosman and Barbot, followed such an offence two and a half centuries ago. In 1845 Mr. Duncan was informed that the victims at the Kana sacrifice “had been guilty of adulterous intercourse with one of the King’s wives, in consequence of which they were sentenced to be put to death by being beaten with clubs, and after death mutilated” (vol. i. p. 220). The object of the mutilation is here, I believe, wrongly stated.
