Note 658 — Chapter III · SENECA THE PHILOSOPHER: MISCELLANEOUS LEARNING

Reading edition

M. Bourgery concludes that Bks. VI. and VII., as exhibiting an increase of regular clausulae, were written after the other books. M. Pichon asks why, if that metrical criterion holds for VI. and VII., one should not apply it to Bk. V. Bk. V. is credited with only 41% of regular clausulae, and so by M. Bourgery’s test should be earlier than I. and II., which have about 50%.
