A literary history of Rome in the Silver Age

Note 1682 — Chapter II · TACITUS

Reading edition

Schanz, op. cit., II., pp. 293-296. Gudeman (op. cit., proleg.) successfully controverts Leo’s hypothesis of a date after Agric. and Germ., and refutes the support lent to that hypothesis in the theory of style propounded by Norden and Wilamowitz. Vogt’s pamphlet, Tac. als Politiker, Stuttg., 1924, ends with a brief defence of the early date.
