Note 226 — Chapter XVI

Reading edition

Early in 1731, Périer, governor of Louisiana, attacked a fort which the Natchez had built near the confluence of Ouachita and Black rivers. A number of warriors eluded the French and escaped; but the remaining Indians, including the chief men of the tribe and several hundred women and children, were captured and sold as slaves in San Domingo. The remnant of the tribe retreated to the Chickasaw, who continued the war. See ante, note 147.—Ed.
