Note 188 — Chapter X
Reading edition
The Canadian is the chief tributary of the Arkansas, and was long confused with the Red. In 1820 Major S. H. Long (see our volumes xiv-xvii), mistaking it for the Red, followed the Canadian from its source until near its confluence with the Arkansas. The name is a corruption of Rio Cañada, given to the stream because its upper waters flow through cañons.—Ed.
