Note 153 — Chapter III · BISHOPS.
Reading edition
The policy of the Spanish Church is forcibly expressed by the Council of Salamanca, in 1565. “The very name of heretics should be so hateful to the faithful that it should never pass our lips if it can possibly be avoided. Preachers should propound the doctrines of the faith and give the reasons and authorities for them, but should never allude to the sects of the heretics or to their arguments. In scholastic disputations no heretical, or dangerous, or erroneous assertions should be introduced, even for the purpose of exercise, but only those approved by the customs of each university.”—Concil. Salmanticens. ann. 1655, Decr. xxxii (Aguirre, V, 453).
