By the early laws of Rhode Island, after the wedding, the person solemnizing gave to the parties a certificate in the following form: "I hereby certify that A. B. of ——, son of ——, and C. D. of ——, daughter of ——, were lawfully joined together in marriage on the —— day of —— by me the subscriber."—Pub. Laws (1798), 486. At present the "indorsement" is in similar form: Gen.
