Note 41 — Chapter XI · HISTORY OF SEPARATION AND DIVORCE UNDER ENGLISH AND ECCLESIASTICAL LAW

Reading edition

Cf. the sources cited by Freisen, Geschichte des can. Eherechts, 770; Meyrick, in Dict. Christ. Ant., II, 1110. This view is taken by Augustine, De serm. dom. in monte, c. xvi; but he doubts its correctness in the "Retractions;" Meyrick, loc. cit. Tertullian shows also that mishandling and insult, as well as adultery, are considered sufficient grounds of separation: Geffcken, Ehescheidung, 20, 21. See however, Perrone, De mat. christ., III, 231 ff.
